ARTIST BIO

SASHA GRINNELL

portriat_edited_edited.png

Sasha Grinnell was born and raised in Hinton, Alberta. Being surrounded by the beautiful Rocky Mountains, she was able to find her initial inspirations. Sasha has dabbled in all forms of art but discovered at RDC that her preferred medium is acrylic paint.

Sasha welcomed her son in January 2019. He’s an energetic toddler, always keeping her in her toes. But once in the new groove of motherhood, Sasha started her new painting series ‘Good Enough’.

Sasha has a strong passion and love for nature and all it encompasses. As well as motherhood, music and adventure are her top inspirations.

You may recognize Sasha's work from several displays at restaurants, bars and cafes throughout Edmonton, Red Deer and Calgary. You may have even spotted her at the YEG Art walk! Sasha has also illustrated four children’s book series - Children’s Words for Living, by Laurie Simpson. Her work is currently displayed at Bloom Therapy, located in Spruce Grove. Sasha is also known for her custom pet portraits.

ARTIST STATMENT

‘Good enough’
Is my visual representation of how nothing feels good enough as a mother, partner, friend, artist while suffering through mental and physical illness. It’s about learning to accept and even appreciate the mistakes made and how we change and adapt.

The flowers show how we are always growing, changing, blooming, blossoming, adapting and flourishing in motherhood. Even though I’m in a constant state of self-doubt, feeling clouded, uncertainty and wanting to hide.

The bees are a representation of the community that’s required; my partner, family, friends and medical professionals. Knowing I need to rely on others and that it’s acceptable to ask for help.
